Counterfeit twenty dollar bills
August 02, 2013

August 2, 2013 Crimestopper of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on the passing of counterfeit bills in the Richland County Area. The investigation found that at least five businesses in Sidney had taken United States twenty dollar bills ($20) for purchases and later found that the bills were counterfeit.  In examining the bills they are smaller in size than an actual bill and did not have the security strip or the water mark.  All the counterfeit bills had the same serial number.

The Sidney Police Department is working with the United States Secret Service regarding the counterfeit bills and has been told that there have been other areas in Montana that counterfeit bills are being passed.  The serial number of the bills passed in the Richland County area has a different serial number than the counterfeit bills that other Montana Communities have seen.

Crimestoppers is asking that business owners and their employees pay special attention to all money that they are taking in on the sale of their products or services.  Crimestoppers is also asking that the public pay attention to money that they receive from businesses or individuals to make sure that they are not receiving a counterfeit bill. The bills that are being past at this time have been all twenty dollar bills, but Crimestoppers ask that all large denomination bills be checked.  The bills have been passed in many different types of businesses, so everyone needs to be aware of the fact that counterfeit bills have been passed.

Please contact your local law enforcement agencies if you feel you have someone tring to pass a counterfeit bill at your place of business.  Contact Crimestoppers if you feel that you may have information on the individual or individuals that are manufacturing these counterfeit bills or passing them.

Please contact Crimestoppers if you have any information that could help solve or led to the arrest of those responsible for this crime.
