Multiple thefts in the Sidney Area

January 5, 2016 Crime of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on different thefts that have been reported to the Sidney Police Department.  Since September of 2015 the Sidney Police Department has responded to a number of theft reports from residence mostly in the east side of Sidney with a number of battery powered hand tools mostly Dewalt brand being taken.  The Sidney Police Department has also had multiple thefts of handguns, a blacksmithing forge with blower and a Stihl brand chainsaw thefts have occurred from vehicle and residence.  These are just a few of the items that have been report stolen in the last 4 months.

Theft Spree in Sidney
December 18, 2015

On 12/4/15 the Sidney Police Department and the Richland County Sheriff`s Office responded to multiple complaints of theft and criminal trespass involving a male subject driving a dark blue Toyota pickup with North Dakota plates and damage to the front passenger side fender. 

The subject was located and arrested for multiple counts of felony theft, and during the ensuing investigation a significant amount of potentially stolen property was recovered from the suspect`s vehicle.  While the owners of some of the property have been identified there are still numerous items whose owners have not yet been identified.  The unclaimed property includes power tools, hand tools, automotive wheels and tires, a generator, stereo equipment, a large sheet of aluminum, gas cans, and various other items.

We are asking for the public`s assistance in identifying the owner or owners of the remaining property that is believed to be stolen.  If you believe that you may have been a victim of this theft spree please contact the Sidney Police Department at 406-433-2210 or the Richland County Sheriff`s Office at 406-433-2919.



Criminal Mischief to rural Richland County Resident

December 8, 2015 Crime of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on the criminal Mischief to property, Criminal Trespassing and Burglary.  On September 18, 2015 the Richland County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a resident living in the northwest part of Richland County out of Lambert, Montana.  During the investigation it was found that on September 18, 2015 between the hours of 7 PM and 9:30 PM unknown person or persons entered a rural residence when into the upstairs bathroom turned on both the hot and cold faucets to the bathroom sink, plugged the drain and stuffed clothing in the overflow hole of the sink.  This action caused the water to overflow the sink and causing water damage to the upstairs, main floor and basement of the residence.  The owners of the house stated that they had left for about two hours to go to the Lambert Homecoming Football Game and returned to find the damage.  They feel that someone would have known that they would be away from their residence during this time and went to the house to do the criminal mischief.  Crimestopper is asking that anyone with information on who could be responsible for this to contact Crimestoppers.

Littering in the County

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on the littering of property on private land. On August 20, 2015 the Richland County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a Richland County  resident of used furniture being thrown out on their private road west of the airport road.  Upon investigating this complaint it was found that a used three section brown leather sofa and two wooden bar stools with the backs broken off prior to being left, had been thrown to the side of the roadway.  These items would have been discarded around August 18th to the 20th.  Crimestopper is asking any that may have information about who may have discarded this furniture or may know of someone disposing of furniture matching the description around that time frame to contact Crimestoppers. 

The dumping and throwing of garbage out on the roadways or private land is a very anointing problem everywhere.  Most citizens are very good about disposing of their garbage or unwanted items in the proper manner; it’s just a few that don’t take the time to dispose of their waste in or at the waste disposal sites.

Eagle Scout Trailer Stolen

August 14, 2015 Crime of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on the theft of property. On July 26, 2015 the Sidney Police Department received a report from a Sidney resident of the theft of their 2008 Black Cryo trailer with white colored rim and having a Montana plate on the rear 27-16411.  The trailer had been left on 12th Ave. and 3rd St. NW in a lot next to the future location of the Fire Station.  A young man working on his Eagle Scout project at the location and was using his parent’s trailer to transport supplies for the project.  On the trailer at the time of the theft were a number of 2X4’s and a homemade sign that said “Sidney Volunteer Fire Department”. The trailer would have been taken between 1300 Hours (1PM) on July 25, 2015 and 1931 Hours 7:31PM on July 26, 2015.  Trailer and supplies were valued at $5000.00.

Damage to property

May 15, 2015 Crime of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on criminal Mischief to property and Criminal Trespassing.  On May 9, 2015 the Richland County Sheriff’s Office received information from a local business that someone had entered property northwest of Sidney at a gravel pit where they have large equipment parked and did damage to the to the property.  It was found that on the evening hours of May 8, 2015 or early morning hours of May 9, 2015 person(s) unknown entered the gravel pit area, were able to started large dozer’s, then drove them around damaging the roadways and land.  Also started and operated was a large excavating machine on tracks.  It was moved short distance then used to dig a large hole about 15 feet deep in the middle of the road.  The damage to the property will take the business many hours of labor to repair and the hole in the road created a safety issue if someone had not saw it and drove into it. Motorcycle stolen from residence in Sidney.

On the morning of April 25, 2015 the Sidney Police Department received a report from a Sidney resident that a motorcycle had been stolen from their residence in the southeast area of town the previous night.  The motorcycle was described as a 2013 Suzuki DRZ-400SM that is white in color with blue rims, and was bearing Montana license plate 27-S71.  At this time there are no known suspects and the Sidney Police Department is requesting your assistance with any information that may lead to the arrest of the person or persons involved in this crime or in the recovery of the motorcycle.  Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact Richland County Crimestoppers or the Sidney Police Department.  As always, callers may remain anonymous.

Found gun safe off of Highway 16 South

April 6, 2015 Crime of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on a large safe found abandon off a county road.  On January 15, 2015 the Richland County Sheriff’s Office received information of a large gun style safe with the doors pried open in the ditch about ½ mile off of Highway 16 south of Sidney.  Upon investigation a large gray metal colored gun safe was found in the north ditch directly off County Road 339.  The safe had the make “Centurion by Liberty” on the front of the safe.  The safe had been attacked by both pry bars and cut marks that appeared to have been made by a metal saw. The dial on the front of the safe was knocked off and was not found at the location.   The door of the safe had been pried opened about three quarters of the way open.  Coins and ammunition were found on the ground in the snow around the safe and inside the safe.  The safe was removed from the area by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office and when inspecting the safe it was found that the plate with the serial number on it had been removed.  No other information could be found to identify the owner of the safe and as of this time the owner or where the safe was taken from is not known.  Crimestopper is asking that anyone with information on this safe to contact Richland County Crimestoppers.

Stolen Generator and trailer

March 30, 2015 Crime of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on a theft of a yellow generator on a dual axle trailer.  On March 18, 2015 the Richland County Sheriff’s Office received information of a possible stolen generator located on a oil well location about ½ mile west of Highway 200 north on County Road 132.  Contact was made with those in charge of the oil field site, they said that it did not belong to them and it had showed up at this location 3 to 4 weeks prior to March 18, 2015.  In checking serial numbers it was found that the generator had been reported stolen in November 2014 to the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office.  The generator is yellow in color, brand name of AKSA, on a black dual axle trailer, with an attached 300 gallon diesel fuel tank. The theft occurred in the Bainville, Montana area of Roosevelt County. The generator and trailer are valued at $38,000.00.   The Crimestoppers photo is the actual stolen generator.

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on a theft of items from a truck that was parked on the 100 Block of 3rd Ave NE in Sidney, Montana.  On November 21, 2014 the Sidney Police Department received a report from a local business that between the dates of November 19, and November 20, 2014 a silver 40 gallon fuel tank with a red and white electric transfer pump and containing about 20 gallons of highway use diesel removed from their truck while it was parked in the 100 blk of 3rd St. NE.

Theft from vehicle in parking lot

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on a theft of items from a vehicle that was parked in a parking lot on the 500 Block of North Central Ave.  On September 6, 2014 the Sidney Police Department received a report from the owner of a 1999 Dodge 1500 Red pickup that had been parked in a parking lot with a for sale sign.  The owner had parked the pickup in the lot on September 2, 2014 and went back on September 6, 2014 to check on the vehicle and found items had been taken from the inside cab of the vehicle.  The vehicle had no signs of forced entry to windows and doors. Items had been removed from the dash and the ignition had been drilled out.

  The following items are reported missing for the vehicle:

1.     A powermax TST performance chip for a 1999 Dodge 1500 valued at $1000.00

2.     CD Assembly valued at $100.00

3.     12” 250 watts Kicker Speaker valued at $90.00

4.     Soft green tool case valued at $10.00

5.     450 watts amplifier valued at $200.00

6.     Two gray rubber floor mats valued at $40.00

7.     Craftsman tools valued at $40.00

Total value of items takes $1480.00

STATUS: SOLVED

Richland County Crimestoppers is asking the public to assist in identifying the suspect involved in a burglary from a Sidney business.  On Saturday, August 30th 2014 at about 2:45 AM an unidentified male subject burglarized All Season Motorsports on 7th St. SW in Sidney.  The suspect forced entry into the business, and once inside broke into two gun cabinets and stole a number of firearms from this licensed firearms dealer, along with other sporting goods merchandise and an undisclosed amount of cash.  The security video from the business shows that the suspect is a clean shaven white male with short hair, wearing a baseball cap, and a hooded sweatshirt.

Theft of Rifle from NE Residence in Sidney

July 2, 2014 Crime of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on a theft of a rifle from a residence reported to the Sidney Police Department on April 12, 2014 at about 9:30 AM.  During the investigation it was found that missing from a residence in the 500 Blk of 4th St. NE was a 7MM Mag Browning X Bolt Rifle with a scope in a Cabellas soft gun case.  There was no forced entry to the residence and the victim feels that it may have been taken by someone that they knew they owned the rifle or had been in their residence in the past.  It is believed that the rifle may have been taken between March 23 and the 28th, 2014.   The value of the rifle is about $2500.00.

April 30, 2014 Crimestopper of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on three separate Vandalism / Criminal Mischief reported to the Sidney Police Department on April 14, 2014.  The first was reported at about 0636 hours on the 14th by the owner of a maroon 2000 GMC Sierra pickup that was parked in back of Miller Apartments in the Northeast part of Sidney just east of the 500 blk of North Central Ave.  During the early morning hours of the 14th unknown subject or subjects used a sharp object to cut the sidewalls of 4 tires on the pickup.  Cost of the damage to the tires is about $900.00.  The second report came at about 0756 hours on the 14th by the owner of two vehicles that were parked on the 1200 blk of 5th St. SW.  Officers found that a 2004 Silber Pontiac Grand AM had the two rear tires damaged by a sharp object cutting the sidewalks.   It was found that a second vehicle owned by the caller a 2003 Chevrolet S10 tan in color also had both rear tires damaged by a sharp object and the right front tire damaged by a sharp object that cut the sidewalls.  The estimated damage to the two vehicles is about $1000.00.   The third call came at about 1256 hours on the 14th to the Sidney Police Department by a resident living on the 800 blk of 3rd St. NE who reported that at about 0130 hours a loud crash was heard by the resident and they went out to check and didn’t see anything at that time.  Later it was found that window on the front of the house had been broken by empty alcohol bottle that had been thrown at the window doing about $800.00 in damages

 During the investigation law enforcement found nothing in common between the victims reporting the Criminal Mischief, but it is felt that these acts may have been committed by the same person or persons.

Criminal Mischief/Vandalism (Vehicle Windowshild and side window

March 24, 2014 Crimestopper of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on Vandalism / Criminal Minal Mischief to a 1985 GMC Black pickup that was parked on the 800 block of 8th Ave. SE.  The Sidney Police Department received a report on March 25, 2014 from a resident that lived on the 800 Block of 8th Ave. SE.  The caller stated that on March 24, 2014 at about 10:55PM they heard multiple bangs outside of their home.  The noise was not checked out right away because the caller felt that it was the wind blowing something against the house.  The next day when they checked outside it was found that their vehicle a 1985 Black GMC pickup was damaged.  There was an indentation in the windshield as the object used did not completely penetrate the windshield.  The damage to the windshield could have been done by a tire iron or a object similar to that type of tool.  The front driver side window was completely broken, the driver side mirror was broken and also dented twice, and the passenger side window was broken as well.  It is estimated that there is just under a $1000.00 (thousand dollars) in damages to the vehicle.

Theft of Elgin Bicycle

February 14, 2014 Crimestopper of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on the theft of a antique bicycle from a residence in Sidney, Montana.  On February 13, 2014 the Sidney Police Department received a report of theft from a garage in the Southeast area of Sidney, Montana.  The complainant reported that they had found that a walk-in door to their garage had been removed from the frame an antique bicycle had been removed.  The bicycle was a 1925-1930 Elgin Bicycle with 27” tube type tires, was said to be faded red and the front fender was sawed off.  The value of this is unknown to owner, but it has a lot of family value.

Theft of Vehicle from Downtown Sidney

February 21, 2014 Crimestopper of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on the theft of vehicles that have been report during early morning hours while parked in the business areas in Sidney, Montana.  So far during the month of February 2014 the Sidney Police Department has received 4 reports from individuals that found that there vehicle were missing from the locations where they had parked their vehicles before going out for the evening.  On February 2, 2014 at about 11:00 PM a 2011 Black GMC Sierra pickup was reported missing for the 100 blk of South Central Ave. were it had been parked unlocked with the keys in the vehicle but out of the ignition.  The vehicle was found a short time later in the ditch next to the canal at the end of 14th St. SW.  During the late hours of February 8, 2014 and the early morning hours of February 9, 2014 the Sidney Police Department received 3 reports of missing vehicles from owners that had parked in the area of 100 Blk of East Main, 100 Blk South Central and 100 blk of 2nd St. SE.  Vehicles had been left unlocked with the vehicles engine running or with the keys in the vehicle.  The Vehicles that had been reported stolen were all recovered in a different location than they were originally parked and no damage was down to the vehicles or anything missing. This may have been an act of Joy riding or someone’s idea of a prank.  Even with the cold weather Crimestoppers is asking vehicle owners to practice good safety judgments by not to leave their vehicles unlocked running or leaving them  unlocked with keys in the ignitions or in view.

Theft of guitar from Sunrise Music Store

February 14, 2014 Crimestopper of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on the Male who committed the crime of Theft by taking guitar from a local business in Sidney Montana.  On December 16, 2013 the Sidney Police Department received a report of the Theft of a Gibson “Les Paul” black colored (“1960” Re-issue) electric guitar that was in the Sunrise Music Center on South Central Ave. in Sidney, Montana.  Upon investigation of this Theft the person reporting the theft stated that someone had entered the store without being noticed, while the clerk was away from the sales area for 10 to 15 minutes.  When the clerk heard the front door beeper sound, he went to the sales area to see through the windows a male subject walking outside eastward direction towards the parking area next to the alley carrying something. By the time it was realized that a guitar was missing from the sales area, the male subject had gotten into a vehicle and drove away heading north in the alley. The guitar is valued at about $1700.00.

Theft of ATM from local Sidney Business

February 07, 2014 Crimestopper of the Week

This week Richland County Crimestopper is asking for information on the Male who committed the crime of Theft by taking a ATM machine from a local business in Sidney Montana.  On December 28, 2013 the Sidney Police Department received a report of the Theft of a ATM machine that was in the Coin Op Laundry on South Central Ave. in Sidney, Montana.  Upon investigation of this Theft it was found by watching video recording from inside the building that a person that looked to be a male enters the building at about 3:47 a.m. on December 28, 2013.  The subject was dressed in all black and was wearing a hoody jacket with the hood over his head, with coat zipped all the way up to the point the collar of the coat covered the area of his mouth.  The subject was also wearing gloves during the time he was in the building.  The subject went to the ATM machine and unplugged the machine, then was able to move the machine and drag it out of the Coin Op Laundry.  Total value of the Machine and Money taken during this Theft is about $4,500.00.
